Nine of the 21 years I have been an authorised celebrant were spent in remote communities in the Top End of the Northern Territory, and in north-west Queensland.
This experience exposed me to some interesting events over the years, and I'm still being contacted by people in those remote communities for help with getting married. And help them I do. I recently helped a remote NT couple arrange to marry after discovering their local courthouse staff were not trained to conduct courthouse weddings. I took their Notice of Intended Marriage by remote lodgement, and then set about finding a solution to their sticky situation. Luckily, I was able to find an authorised religious celebrant in a nearby community after scouring the federal celebrant registers, and that person agreed to marry the couple. The process was not helped by conflicting and incorrect information being told to me by BDM NT and NT Courts staff, which I was not prepared to accept and asked for the matter to be escalated. I have actually flagged a situation for NT Courts to follow up with the Federal Attorney-General's department that manages the Marriage Celebrants Program, as the state/territory authorised officer list for the NT does not have current information on it. What this shows you is that while Just Wed may now focus on providing simple, less involved weddings, you don't get simple, less involved service. I have a heck of a lot of experience and knowledge from my 21 years' service, and I do go the extra mile for my clients, especially in situations like this where remote couples are seriously disadvantaged in the "options to get married" stakes. If you think your own personal situation may be too difficult or you feel you have too many hoops to jump to get married - it may in fact not be as hard as it seems. Don't put it off, like the clients I helped marry in late 2022 did when they were initially given incorrect information about marrying in Central West NSW by BDM NSW, and which inspired me to start Just Wed.
